At last, a few moments to recount the beginning of my journey. 3 days in Rio was plenty for an old country girl like me!! Copacabana beach was long and busy so opted for Ipanema instead. Extremely hot weather and very small bikinis ( no, not me!!too scary a thought) Ayrton Senna style bus drivers were terrifying and yes, I´m sure we were actually on 2 wheels at some points!!! God help anyone jay walking in this city. It would probably take a week to find all the pieces!
Paranoia set in not long after arriving at my small hostel, as it appeared that not 1 but 2 couples had already been mugged at knife-point. They even checked one guys pants to see if he had a money belt on!!! Thus informed I set off for the bus station with my money in my bra and wasn´t settled until I was free from the cash and had my ticket. Didn´t take many photos in Rio as worried about losing my camera, although just think the muggees were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Spent a fabulous day trekking in Tijuca national park and visited Christ the Redeemer. Our guide explained that the statue has been there a while and that when the people in Rio start working , Christ will clap them!!!!!
After 3 days I took the bus to Foz Do Iguacu. It should have been 22 hours but ended up as 25!! Then 3 short bus hops to the hostel in the middle of the town and the falls. Its amazing how in the middle of nowhere you meet the strangest people, I did, a guy I used to work with!!!!!!
Spent a day visiting the Brazillian side of the falls and must admit, they were absolutely spectacular. The only down side was it was Saturday and seemed like most of Brazil had come to see them too!! I can never understand why people go to beauty spots and then insist on singing at the top of their voices as though they were in a football crowd. Reedeeming feature was that they were Brazilians singing and not English. Photos will follow when I sus out how to download them. xx
